So, the other day I had to call the nurse for my little one about some health issues, and as the conversation progressed, she started rambling off whole grain foods and included in the list was popcorn. What?! Popcorn's a whole grain? All this time I thought of popcorn as a junk food and completely steered clear of it. It was definitely a treat and not something we had very often.
Of course, you can make it a junk food by adding a whole bunch of stuff to it, but it made me wonder how we can make it as natural as possible and still enjoy it. So, at the beginning of this post is how to make it 'clean'. No other ingredients, the rest is how I made it naughty with lots of chocolate lol.
No stove, oven or air popper needed to pop the kernels! Just a microwave and lunch sack. Simple.
I grabbed a paper lunch sack and put 1/4 cup of kernels into the bottom. That's it.
Folded the bag over twice.
Put it in the microwave for 1 minute and 45 seconds. I have a 1,000 watt microwave. This time varies some times. But, in general this time works the best for me without burning and popping the most kernels. You'll have to play around with the time on your own microwave for best results.
You can eat it just like this. Plain and clean. Or add a dash of salt. My kiddos love it just plain!
Now for the yummy chocolate kind. I used white baking chocolate and followed the instructions on the label to melt it. You can also use candy coating. I then added a little bit of pink food coloring and mixed it in. I laid the popcorn out on a baking dish and poured the melted chocolate all on top of it, mixing it up a little to get the popcorn covered. Then added some sprinkles. Easy!
You can obviously forgo the sprinkles or pink :) I used this for my girls Barbie themed birthday party.
This way of popping corn is great especially when you want to add your own spin to it. It feels great not having to add all the oils and salts and other random ingredients to it when it can really be so simple and yummy!
