DIY Frosted Winter Village -Easy Winter Decor!

Isn't the time after Christmas all the way up until February such a weird time to decorate? You want to take all of Christmas down, but it's way to early to bring in Spring decor. So, what do you do? Winter decor of course! Yep, there's such a thing as winter decor that doesn't include Christmas. To me this is everything frosted or flocked...even trees...minus the ornaments of course! I take out all the normal Christmas colors like red. I usually go for whites, greens, and neutrals. This year I decided to throw a little curve ball into the mix and added black and pink with this vignette! 

Talk about frosted! This cute little winter village is a super easy and fun craft that you can use for winter decor. These "snow frosted" roofs sparkle in every direction; they are sure to grab you eye. 

Supplies you need to make your own frosted winter village:

• Wood cutouts that resemble the shape of a house. I found mine at a local craft store. You can cut a 1x4 or 2x4 into this shape if you have some on hand.
• DecoArt® Holographic Illusions™ Glitter Paint in Crystal Ball and Fairy Pink (Available at Joanns)
• DecoArt® Americana™ Acrylic Paint in Lamp Black, Snow White, and Bubblegum Pink (Available at Joanns)
• Paint brushes.

Step 1: 

Cut out your shapes if you need. I bought these for about a dollar a piece from my local craft store, and saved a little bit of time. 

Step 2: 

Paint the base coat. I alternated mine with Snow White on three and Lamp Black on two. I did two coats.

Step 3: 

Add the windows and the doors in the opposite color. I attempted to draw the windows first with a pencil, but then realized that with a small enough paint brush I could get the same result. The windows don't have to be perfect. That's what give them the character!

Step 4: 

Add snow to the roof. I used the Bubblegum Pink and Snow White to do this. I made the dripping snow by pressing the brush vertically along the roof line.

You can see in this picture kind of how I did the snow look with the brush.

Step 5: 

This is the fun part that totally transforms the houses! Add the "frost" with DecoArt®'s Holographic Illusions™ paint. It has the magic of a true holographic glitter paint with a light-refracting rainbow of bold color. These holographic glitter flakes provide a prismatic sparkle and shine that adds the perfect “pop” to the rooftops!  For the white house, and white snow I used Crystal Ball. I did really thick coats to the top of the houses. For the melting snow or icicles, I used a smaller brush to keep the detail. I did about three coats with this to give an amazing full coverage glittery effect.

On the pink snow, I used the Fairy Pink. This turned out to be my favorite! I did the same technique as above, adding three coats also. On a whim, I decided to add snow to the bottom of each house using the same steps in 4 and 5 (not pictured, but can be seen in final photos).

I wasn't sure how this village would turn out when I first started, so I was so happy with the result! 

Pink is definitely not a color I decorate with, but it offers the perfect little pop of interest in my snowy village. To add height to a couple of houses, I styled them on top of a book.

I kept the rest of the decorations surrounding my village white so the houses would pop! Hopefully this shows that decorating with winter berries, garland, and glitter is totally okay past Christmas. 

The pink on top of these houses reminds me of a candy wonderland. And the white glistens so beautifully! 

Simple crafts like this are the best! We are making them as a family this year, and you should too! You'll never know what direction your cute little houses will go. I'm thinking about doing gingerbread themed ones next!
