If you know me, you know I have an obsession with shoes...mainly boots. My closet in my bedroom is only so big and doesn't accommodate for them very well. So, throughout the years, I've had a few ways of storing them in my entryway. Some worked, some were too small, and some were just awful. That brings us to today. I had one of those "ah-ha" moments. I was in the middle of trying to figure out where to put a bookcase I had just redone, but needed to rehome. It was either headed upstairs, down into my basement for food storage, or out the door to someone else. When that ah-ha moment came along, I grabbed my measuring tape and measured. It was the perfect fit, not too wide nor deep. It fit perfectly in that little corner, and I knew it would be perfect for my overflow of shoes.
Let's start from the beginning a little bit. This was how the bookcase started off. Dark and with glass doors. It as a marketplace find that I had to shove into my Tahoe...and it barely fit. So much for measuring, ha! I painted it and took out the glass. You can see the whole transformation here. I originally bought it for this corner in my living room. It was supposed to be a blanket hutch...obviously ended up as a, well...bookcase :) I then found an antique pie safe to replace this with. And that is when I had to find a spot for it, or toss it. This is when that ah-ha moment took place. I put it in the corner in front of my stairs. Yes, I know...some people would hate this, but it works for us since I literally have no storage space and I try to use ever nook and cranny I can for functionality. I decided to add some boxes to hide the smaller shoes, and dog stuff (poop bags, leashes, etc). I then left some space for my boots.
This of course looks ugly to the eye. So, I decided to hide it behind some fabric. I made these "fabric doors" by simply stapling some linen onto the top and bottom. I started from the ends and worked my way from one end to the other folding the pieces along the way.
This is how I made the pleated look seen below. It took years to get here, but finally the I found the perfect piece for my shoe storage. I don't have shoes spilling out all over the place anymore. They for the most part stay nice and tidy :)
Here's what the shoe storage cabinet looks like on the inside now. Yes, I have many of the same boots, but in different colors :) My favorite ones that line the middle shelf are linked here. ...and technically the ones on the bottom left too :) The very bottom drawer holds all my sandles.
As you can see, my entryway is really tight, but luckily my stairs are wide. So having this size of piece work as a shoe storage cabinet is perfect here.
And because I'm trying to do better and show my face on here more...hello, from my shoe storage cabinet :)
I hope this gave you some inspiration on how to organize your shoes! I'm also done benches, cube storage and an entry way table along my stair wall which is currently still working out well for my kids' shoes.
