I've been updating my bedroom slowly the past couple of months ... err..years...and I'm so close to being done. I'm at a point of adding in all the small details that I think make a big difference. There's this weird cut out in my bedroom where the door goes, and it has left a small bare wall that didn't bug me at first, but now with the wallpaper on the whole adjacent wall, it looks so boring! I didn't realize either how blah my wall switch cover was. Before it was against a beige wall, so it was okay. But now, it just added to the boringness of the wall.
I was thinking about adding the wallpaper onto this little wall, but decided to try something else. I'm going to share 3 ways on how to get this vintage inspired wall switch plate cover look. The first will only cost you a couple of dollars, especially if you are like me and have all the other supplies on hand. I just had to purchase the wood appliques. Here's my supply list below:
Supplies:
Basic Switch Plate Cover or Ornate Switch Plate: Link
Wood appliques from Hobby Lobby. or bigger selection here: Link
I got my wood appliques at Hobby Lobby, but there is actually a huge array over other ones available on Amazon that I wish I knew about. I'll be grabbing some from there as I keep changing out my switch plate covers in the future.
I just took the cover that was already on my wall and spray painted it and the wood appliques with the metallic gold spray paint. I could have left it like this, but I wanted a more vintage/antique vibe.
I then used a small paint brush to apply the Rub 'n Buff European Gold onto the appliques and the wall plate itself.
For the wall plate, I did my best to paint it with the Rub 'n Buff. It looked dirty and gross, but don't worry!
Once I rubbed it and buffed it ... see how that name comes about? ...it ended up looking great! The perfect antique finish.
But then, I wondered if I could make it just a little bit better. I was actually looking online for some vintage brass switch plate covers, and let me tell you. They are expensive! The cheapest one I found was just about $40. While I was searching for those, I came across the below cover. It actually comes in brass, and I just added the Rub 'n Buff to it. I liked how it gave a little more detail than the basic plastic cover I had before. So this is look number two:I got three of these for about $15. If your switches are different than mine, or you have an outlet you want to cover, it comes in lots of varieties to fit your need!
And the after! Now that I know I can find different wood appliques on Amazon, I'm definitely going to update this one. But truthfully, I don't mind this look. Something about it reminds me of an old time elevator switch or something. I'm not sure why or how...but it does haha.

Step 3:
So this step can be replaced with another step. One, you can either just nail the wooded piece right into the wall above the now done wall plate switch cover...or you can go my way and use some earthquake putty on it :) haha, yep! Works like a charm! Just kind of wiggle it around and then put into place.
This way turned out perfect! It's all I really needed to update this small wall and bring interest to it. Plus, it only cost me like $2 to do!I loved how my light switch cover turned out so much, I decide I had to do some other in this room including an outlet cover. Here's the before:
As I said before, it's these little details that really make a difference in a space! So don't skip them! I had no idea how happy it would make me turning on a light in this room haha. Now it does!
