DIY Flocked Velvet Christmas Ornaments: Easy Step-by-Step Tutorial

Earlier this season I was searching for velvet Christmas ornament balls and couldn't find any. I went into Hobby Lobby in early November and asked if they would have more. The lady told me that they sold out in July. I don't know who is shopping for Christmas decor in July, but it is definitely not me. So, then I went on to Amazon only to find them crazy expensive. I ended up finding some that worked (linked here), but wanted more...so I decided to make some look-a-likes instead! ... you know, save me some money :)

This was great because it used stuff I already had at home and was super easy to do.

Supplies:
Ornaments (can be clear or old ones)
Acrylic paint
Baking Soda
Spoon/plate
Stencil brush
Added bonus: Rub n' Buff for the tops of the ornaments

Step 1:
Paint the ornament with one coat of paint. Wait to dry. Then paint a pretty thick second coat, but smoothing out any lines. Do not let this dry.
Step 2:
Pile on the baking soda over the wet paint.
Make sure to cover the whole thing.
Step 3:
Add them to skewers and place them in a cup to dry. This is hard to tell when they are dry, but mine was good at about an hour, and half hour for another. You'll know for sure if it was long enough in step 5.
Step 4:
While those are drying, grab some Rub n' Buff and add it to the tops to make them a little more antique looking.
Step 5:
After about an hour, take the brush and every so gently start brushing away at the baking soda. You'll notice this point if it is dry or not. If it is dry, it should come off pretty smoothly without chunks of paint coming off.
Keep brushing until you get the majority of the baking soda off.
If you need to at the very end, blow on the bulb a bit to get all the excess.

I was surprised at how good these turned out! I have them in my dough bowl and the baking soda has stayed on them. I can handle them pretty decently and nothing comes off. The baking soda legit dried in with the paint leaving it to look like the perfect flocked or velvet ornament.

I chose to do green, brown, and a light grey color for the ornaments. I was curiously to see how the dark and light colors would turn out. They both look great! It does lighten the color just a bit as you can figure putting a white dust of them.
This time of year is for crafting for me! I do so much of it for some reason. It's just a fun time to slow down and be creative :) Think you'll try this?

Now let's see if we can DIY velvet ribbon, ha! That's been elusive as well this year!
