Neutral Valentine's Day Decor: DIY Pie Safe Makeover with Budget-Friendly Touches

Valentine's Day is in the air! I actually don't really decorate for Valentine's Day around my house. I'll add some wood heart beads (for tutorial click here), but that's really the extent of it. This year, I decided to flex my decor muscles a bit and decorate this pie safe I made last year. I decided to go with a neutral Valentine's theme. I hope this gives you some inspiration on decorating for the holiday without thinking you need to go all out with reds and pinks. You can achieve the look with just a few key items.

My key items I added were:
  • Gold touches
  • Ironstone
  • Lace and ribbon
  • Clay hearts
  • Doilies
  • Floral textile print
  • Candles
  • Dried white flowers

In truth, I didn't change the inside of this pie safe much from where it began. The ironstone and books are usually in here, but I added a few key elements to it that made it swing towards Valentine's decor. The handmade white clay hearts pretty much did all the work in this case. Really, you add a heart to something, and boom...Valentine's. I added one into the small ironstone pitcher and placed one leaning up against the vintage book stack. Ribbons are also perfect to give a space a little more romantic look...along with candles. These candles were a dollar store hack from a couple of weeks ago (tutorial here). I simply added some neutral ribbon and jute to soften them.

I then hung even more clay hearts and ribbon on the open door. This door looks a little unfinished without anything so, I usually hang something to tie it into the rest of the pie safe.

The top of the pie safe as dried flowers in a crock that my husband gave to me for Mother's Day two years ago. I placed it on an embroidered wreath I made that includes couple of pinks and maroons. I then added a soft vintage floral print in this dollar store hacked frame..(yep! another hack...tutorial click here). The gold in this frame, and vintage print definitely tied the look together and helped with the Valentine's theme.

By stacking the ironstone pitchers on books and other small bowls, it helps give the inside space height and depth. You can't tell with these bowls and butter pat dishes, but some of them have the sweetest floral elements. Even though you can't see them, I think they fit perfect in here for Valentine's.
Can you believe that a pie safe sat in this corner with closed doors and just extra dishes for years? I never decorated it. I changed the top plant that was on a occasionally for the season, but besides that...nothing. It's been so fun now to have a little corner to decorate seasons with. It's little...but it's mighty!
And would you believe that a big portion of this is all DIY? The pie safe, the candlesticks, the frame, the clay hearts, and the embroidered tea towel. I'll share how to do the clay hearts soon!
