Last year, my mother-in-law bought a beautiful house right by a lake. Throughout the past year, I've been helping her with some ideas on how to make it feel a little more like a "lake house" and slowing have been implementing those ideas :) We put up some board and batten, added a new rug and few different accessories. The next thing on the list was resurrecting her coffee table. Most of the furniture in her house is really dark, and so we'll be working on painting and changing things out one by one. This coffee table was the first up! Here's the before:
It's actually a really decent, well built coffee table and I knew it could look amazing in here with just a little paint :)
So, here's how I did it. First off was to sand it a little bit, to rough it up so it would take the paint better.
Next was painting it. We used a semi-gloss white mixed with primer.
Once the paint was dried. I added 1x6 boards to the top of the table, making it the same width and length as the top. I lucked out and somehow five boards equaled the exact width of the table :) I secured these boards on with 2" finishing nails.
Then I sanded the boards.
I focused heavily on the edges and corners to give it a really smooth look.
Next was applying the stain. I used Classic Grey from Minwax. This color turned out amazing with just one coat!
I waited a day for the stain to set and then added some poly. We ended up using 3 coats for maximum durability :)
The last step was distressing it a bit. I love how the black showed through just a bit.
Here's what the corners looked like once all done...and the color of course. After a few days, the grey ended up looking a little more brown. I think if we had added an extra coat, it would have stayed a little more grey.
For the drawers, I was contemplating changing out the knobs, but once we put them back on they looked amazing!
We even distressed the legs a little bit. I wasn't sure about it at first, but it works!
I love how it brightened up this space so much. Now if we can get rid of those navy couches! haha. I told her, she needs to work with them, not around them. Don't decorate as if they weren't there, use the colors from them in your decor. Either way, she's getting new couches soon :)
Here's the top view of the coffee table display and a good idea of the stain color.
This rug was a Target find, it's the Maples Fretworks rug.
Now let's look at these amazing windows that look over the lake! I think we are going to try to add some board and batten in the dining room too. We'll see :)
Here's another before of the table:
And after:
Can't wait to show you more of what's in store for her house! We have planked walls, square board and batten and a ton more things to do!
What a beautiful update! And, I understand about the couches but they look just fine the way they are set up with everything else! It's a gorgeous room.
ReplyDeleteAlicia, I love the makeover for the coffee table. Did you elect to board over the top because it was easier than stripping it? Love the white against the woodgrain.
ReplyDeleteWhaaat? You aren't going to paint the couches? :)))))

I love the coffee table with the wood top and I know your mother-in-law appreciates your help. I think the picture above the fireplace could use a frame and be hung a little bit lower..... Just saying.
ReplyDeleteThe couches, being navy, look very nautical, so I don't think there is a big rush to buy a beige sectional :) The table looks amazing! All the stuff you do is so clean and pretty!
ReplyDeleteThis little cute coffee table is looking so adorable. It is looking totally different and new in fresh white paint. Fabulous work done! It is cpmletely complementing couches and living space.
ReplyDeleteI certainly wouldn't get rid of the navy couches, unless they're in bad shape, which by the photos they don't appear to be. She has a lakeside side and what's more nautical than navy color :-) If they're in good condition, why replace? They give the very light room (which I do love) a few places to have some grounding for the eye. The table redo looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteLove your coffee table makeover, why replace the navy sofa they add a good depth to your room. I noticed your picture above the fireplace needs to be lower, or maybe place a couple bigger objects under the picture. Your living room looks gorgeous, cozy.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, job well done!
ReplyDeleteI love how it came out - gorgeous! I am thinking of redoing my coffee table and I love the color you went with! I am in the process of building a farmhouse table and I got the Rusteoleum Weather Grey for the top. I need to practice on something first to make sure I like it! Thanks for the tutorials!
ReplyDeleteI have that exact same coffee table and I have been wanting to give my home more of a "farm house" look. This is perfect! Is there a reason you added the boards to the top? Can the top not be stained once it's sanded? I have the matching end tables too...I cannot wait to get started on this!
ReplyDeleteI would love to know how yours turns out also, Amanda Hartley, as I also have this table and end tables.
DeleteWhere did you get the tables? Love the big chunky legs.
DeleteBeautiful table!
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of wood did you use for the top. Is it a white oak?
ReplyDeleteIt's just pine from Home Depot.
DeleteDid anyone find out what kind of wood she used for the top? The plywood we have does not come out the same as hers. We got the same exact brand and shade of stain :(
ReplyDeleteIt's actually not plywood. It's 1x6 pine boards from Home Depot
DeleteLooks amazing!!! I am currently redoing a table and picked the same gray but mixed with jacobean. I cant wait to see how it comes out. Your project is truly a beautiful transformation! Also def gonna buy that poly you mentioned.. Thanks! :)

Can someone tell me where to buy this table and matching end tables? Thanks!
DeleteI Also would like to know.Love the big chunky legs.
DeleteCan you tell me more about how you secured the boards? Did you just hammer 2 inch finishing nails? How many nails per board? Also what did you use to apply the stain and how did you do it carefully enough not to touch the white paint? I'm afraid my unsteady hand would touch the white lol.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous!!! I love how the Classic Gray stain came out. I have tried using the same stain but I NEVER like the result. It's never ever nearly as beautiful as yours! Did you brush it on or just use a cloth?
